Easy DIY Cigar Jewelry Boxes

Readers who know me personally know that I have a weakness for cufflinks—I wear them daily. For years I kept my cufflinks in a drawer, some of them had their own individual boxes, some were just loose. But it became a problem rooting through dozens of cufflinks in the morning not only deciding which ones to wear but finding a matching pair. A few years ago I came up with a solution to my cufflink storage and display needs by making easy DIY cigar jewelry boxes, which I also call cufflink keepers.

This craft project is so simple, it’s almost embarrassing to write about.  But these cufflink keepers also make great gifts and I have been asked where I bought them.

You will need:

Boxes

Foam Jewelry Pads

Scissors

Ruler

Wine

Even though I use cigar boxes, any type of decorative box will work such as a chocolate box or a cake tin. The box should not exceed 14 x 8 inches or the foam pads will be too small.  And for my purposes, I prefer to leave the box as is with the cigar labels intact. But depending on the box, a painted finish could be quite interesting.

The tough part is finding the right kind of foam for the insert. I have seen on craft websites how to roll thick fabric and hot glue it down to hold the jewelry, but I figure why bother when foam pads are readily available.  In a large city, ring display foam can be purchased at a jewelry supply company. But for those in a rural area the foam is easily purchased online through Amazon.com (I have included a link below). Perhaps your favorite local jewelry store could order a few pads for you. I purchased from both and preferred the quality from the jewelry supply, but work with what you have. I used foam with a black velvet finish but it comes in many colors, including red and blue. And shop the various types of pad, some are designed for other kinds of jewelry depending on your specific needs and taste.

While enjoying a glass of wine, measure the inside area of the box and, paying careful attention to where the precut ring holes fall (the jewelry inset holes to be even, straight, and symmetrical), cut the size ¼” to ½” larger than needed. I use a marker to make guidelines on the reverse side.  The hard part is done.

Once the foam is inserted into the box it will lay flat and compress in order to smooth rough edges. There is no need to glue the foam to the bottom of the box.

And that is it. Those are the steps involved in making easy DIY Cigar Jewelry Boxes—all you have to do now is buy more jewelry. These little boxes also make great gift boxes.  Next I might try hollowing out the inside of a book for a secret hidden cufflink keeper.

You are so creative! I absolutely LOVE my cigar boxes and have tossed around some ideas of fun things to do with them. I just love the way they look and hesitate to alter them. Thanks, Troy!
